Community foundations have been established for far longer in the USA then in the UK. An example from the USA shows the power of endowment funding. A successful businessman, Curtis Wyland, left a bequest of over US$6 million back in the 1950s as an unrestricted fund to his local community foundation. Nowadays it goes to support many diverse cause, some of which could not have been anticipated at the time, such as HIV services, a community film festival, environmental projects and many more.
