TYPES OF MEMBERSHIP

Community Foundation Network (CFN) offers a range of services to a diverse membership:

Members are established community foundations
Associates are aspiring community foundations
Affiliates are community foundations outside the UK, CFN�s partner organisations in the UK and overseas, or other UK grant-makers that share CFN�s commitment to local communities

CORE ACTIVITIES

CFN’s purpose is to promote and support the growth of its Members and Associates so as to strengthen local communities through the provision of services to donors and strategic grant-making. Core activities are:

. Promoting and marketing the community foundation model and its benefits, as well as philanthropy and philanthropic giving generally
. Providing assistance to individual community foundations across the UK to develop their own resources and long-term sustainability
. Developing and administering programmes that advance and support the growth of community foundations and the broader community benefit they bring to the UK

SERVICES TO MEMBERS

CFN’s services to Members and Associates include:

.

Promotion of the community foundation concept through:

  • Promoting community foundations to key policy-makers, government offices, national donors and the media
  • Mapping and tracking community foundations’ activities and projects and disseminating examples of good practice
  • Researching and gathering statistics on the growth of community foundations
  • Negotiating and managing new, national grant-making opportunities for the benefit of members

Network development services through:

  • Information services including the magazine, a fortnightly Ebulletin (which covers announcements, policies, strategies and legislation relevant to community foundations), the hub (a collection of sample documents from the network), information sheets and other publications
  • Access to CFN’s library at Arena House
  • Development grants to community foundations for specific help at different stages of organisational development
  • Networking opportunities through financial support to peer interest groups, use of e-groups and a comprehensive directory of foundation staff across the UK network
  • Training events and conferences for staff and trustees
  • Development advice, information, support and other practical assistance
  • Negotiated national benefits, such as reduction on cost of key publications, help in kind from PizzaExpress and Source Communications, and access to the charity fundraising helpline of Charity Consultants
  • Calls at local rates to CFN’s London office

Programmes, through:

  • The ICT Project and DIGITS software custom built for community foundations’ use
  • Fair Share, a �50 million project of the New Opportunities Fund, managed by CFN on behalf of its members and other agencies
  • Time for Growth, a �1 million project that challenges ten UK community foundations to raise a total of �20 million in endowment within three years
  • YouthBank UK, established with �1 million secured by the consortium consisting of CFN, British Youth Council, Changemakers, the Prince's Trust and the National Youth Agency

MEMBERSHIP COMMITMENTS

CFN is committed to providing the highest level of service to its Members and Associates, as well as giving and receiving feedback on their respective roles and the effectiveness of the relationship between them.

CFN’s Members and Associates commit to:

. Comply with membership criteria for good practice in running a community foundation
. Contribute to their own development and that of other community foundations through networking and liaison
. Provide CFN with detailed information on fund develpment, grant-making and other activities by completing an annual questionnaire
. Where possible, participate in CFN's board, sub-comittees and working groups

Annual subscriptions are charged within bands starting at �200 and based on each Member or Associate’s finances - endowment held and level of recent grant-making.
