The power to make a difference
Making a difference in your community
Giving to your local community can be a hugely rewarding experience. There’s a unique sense of satisfaction in knowing that you are making a real difference to the lives of others, especially close to home. But with generosity comes responsibility. Because the more you give, the more important it is to make the right choices; to ensure that your money achieves maximum impact, in the areas that matter most to you. And that’s harder than ever these days, when there are literally hundreds of charities and community groups out there, all competing for your attention. If it’s important to you not just to give, but to give effectively, your local community foundation is here to help.
Community foundations are charities committed to supporting projects that engage local people in making their communities better places to live. Since the 1980s, a nationwide network has developed and today there are around 60 community foundations covering 90% of the UK population, from inner cities to remote rural communities.
Community foundations are one of the country’s fastest growing forms of philanthropy, endorsed by many major public figures and leading companies.
The Personal Fund: an easier, more effective way to give
Setting up a Personal Fund with a community foundation opens up exciting new opportunities for making a real difference with your giving.
It’s simple, hassle-free and extremely flexible. It allows you complete freedom to achieve your charitable objectives, while leaving the community foundation to take care of all the administration - from seeking out projects that match your charitable wishes to ensuring your gift is tax-efficient.
The first step is to meet to discuss what you want your fund to achieve, and how it should be structured. Community foundation staff will guide you through a variety of options, depending whether you have a lump sum immediately available or plan to build an endowed fund (usually of at least £25,000) over a longer period.
Once your fund is up and running, it’s up to you how much involvement you want. But, hands-on or hands-off, you can rely upon your community foundation’s in-depth local knowledge to ensure your money goes to organisations and projects whose work has been thoroughly assessed for its value to the community (some of which you would probably never discover otherwise). The community foundation will continue to monitor recipients of grants on your behalf, and keep you informed of their progress. If you wish, you can genuinely engage with the causes you care about.
Meanwhile, professional investment managers will be applying their expertise to build the value of your fund. You will receive information on tax-efficient giving, ensuring that every penny which goes into your fund is used to the best possible effect.

For example … going straight to the heart of local issues
Mr and Mrs A had always supported a wide range of charities, but they both felt a strong desire to channel some of their giving into their local community. But, like many people, they were unsure how best to go about it; in particular, how to identify local organisations that would make really good use of their support.
Their dilemma was resolved when they were introduced to their local community foundation. With the foundation’s help, Mr and Mrs A set up a substantial fund, with the aim of making a real difference to the lives of people in their community, in perpetuity.
The couple are very happy with the decision they made: “We realised that here are an enormous number of small charities and voluntary groups around the county, dealing with a wide range of issues from disability to homelessness, from young people in isolated areas to the frail elderly. When we talked to the community foundation, we realised that they were exactly what we were looking for: a straightforward way of hitting straight to the heart of the key issues affecting people in need. They have the local knowledge needed to understand and identify the specific needs of our local community.”
