Special Olympics – Bury is a sports organisation that provides those with a disability a place where they can interact with other members and participate in a variety of sports.

Since the transfer of the business to community ownership, the level of community investment, both in terms of financial contributions and volunteer activity, has grown. The local shop has become a community hub where people not only shop, but meet to exchange views and publicise local events.

Two nuns have transformed their local community, who have shown appreciation and commitment to their work by joining them as volunteers, allowing them to extend the activities to the wider community.

Mary's efforts, completely voluntary, have helped to create a community driven initiative that has touched the lives of not only hundreds of local people, but has informed and inspired communities throughout the country and beyond.

A free karate training programme run by an off-duty policeman has helped to reduce anti-social behaviour involving youngsters in Leeds.
