The Olive Branch project is run by a group of dedicated volunteers under the umbrella of the Bethel Community Church. It provides a free drop in service for homeless and vulnerably housed people in Newport, South Wales.
Inside the renovated cafe, the Olive Branch project provides support for over 35 guests each week by giving their time and a hot meal with a drink to develop a friendship with a good listening ear. There are numerous facilities available for guests to use at the community centre including IT facilities and internet to assist in job searches and to source any information and advice needed. There are also showers and a clothes bank service supported by the Salvation Army, where guests can benefit from clean, dry clothes. A games room and arts and crafts sessions allow guests to express themselves in ways that is not possible in their day to day lives.
Medical advice, counselling and literacy tutoring are also available at the drop in session, which can improve the health and well being of the guests.
In 2009, the Olive Branch along with other organisations ran an emergency Night Shelter project through December to March. This provided homeless people with shelter through cold winter months. Over 200 volunteers assisted in this project seven nights a week for the four month period and will continue in 2010 and 2011.
