
For individuals living with a physical or mental disability it can sometimes be difficult to socialise with other members of the community. This is largely because they are often misunderstood or discriminated against; but it can also be because they can lack vital social skills and so are unable to build friendships and social networks.
On top of that there aren’t many places for them to go where the correct attention and facilities are provided in a safe environment where they can enjoy themselves. This must be frustrating, not only them as individuals, but also for those close to them as it means they can become socially excluded.
Special Olympics – Bury is a sports organisation that provides those with a disability a place where they can interact with other members and participate in a variety of sports. They encourage people with disabilities to live healthier and more active lifestyles and reduce the social isolation that people with disabilities often experience.
Keano, one member spoke of how he’d made great friends since joining the group, he explains:
“It gets me away from the parents! I’ve made loads of friends since I’ve come here and I’d be sad, sick, if I couldn’t come here. It’s simply the best!”
